A Message From Our General Manager Regarding PFAS
I am writing to let you know that Rising Tide is paying close attention to the situation with PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances), also referred to as “forever chemicals.” It has always been a priority of the Co-op to keep our community well-fed with healthy, natural, and organic products while supporting our local food economy. Although we strive to be well informed, we are by no means scientists, regulators, or policy experts. In regard to the situation involving PFAS in Maine, we are closely following information released by MOFGA, EPA, Maine CDC, and the Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation, and Forestry.
As MOFGA states “The widespread use of these products across the country for many years means this problem is not going to be specific to products grown in Maine, though Maine farmers are concerned and are leading the way in the testing of crops.” This is a complex and distressing issue, and it is important that we remain steady in order to help find a sustainable way forward that takes care of all of you and our broader community of producers. Maine is one of a handful of states that are on the cutting edge with looking at and addressing PFAS pollution. For this reason, it is important to note that the best solution is not looking outside our borders and assuming that food from away is any safer. Our farming community is getting their lands, water, and products tested. This is expensive and the results can be life-changing. It is important that we work together to support our local food system during this time while simultaneously protecting the health of our shoppers.
We encourage you to stay informed and become involved in enacting legislation to remove PFAS products from production and to promote safer alternatives. Below are a variety of links to resources. Rising Tide will continue to do everything we can and will adjust our policies as we know more.
With a commitment to our growers, community, and to health,
Heather
